IBSA meet on women’s issues

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: India, Brazil, and South Africa will shortly sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that will focus on women’s issues, including domestic violence, micro-finance, and economic empowerment.

The draft MoU finalised on Tuesday at a two-day meet of the women’s forum of Indo-Brazil and South Africa (IBSA) has been sent to the Legal and Treaties Division of the Ministry of External Affairs for vetting, according to Minister of State for Women and Child Development Renuka Chowdhary.

The MoU will focus on inclusive macro-economic policy and research, gender budgeting, micro-finance, violence against women, cooperative societies in women and cooperation at multilateral forums.

Speaking at the inauguration of the meet, Ms. Chowdhury said the MoU would aim to strengthen joint initiatives and cooperation in identified programmatic areas. Cooperation under this MoU was proposed to be implemented through exchange of visits, sharing of information, civil society partnerships and human resource development and training.

The IBSA women’s forum was launched in October 2007 in South Africa to facilitate joint efforts and collaboration in areas of women’s development. Ministerial-level delegations from Brazil and South Africa, diplomats, parliamentarians, and U.N. representatives are attending the meet.

The deliberations will focus on the theme ‘Strengthening the women’s movement for an equitable society.’
