Loyola College sets three meet records on the opening day

Chennai: Loyola College set all the three meet records on the opening day of the A.L. Mudaliar inter-Collegiate athletics meet, here on Monday.

The records were set in pole vault, 5000m and the 400m hurdles.

K. Boobalan, 23, raised the pole vault record, previously set in 2004-05 by M. Mukesh, also of Loyola, by a centimetre, clearing the bar at 4.36m.

“The rain kept coming on and off, and delaying my jump. I had to warm up and warm down three times before I could make my jump,” he said.

But it didn’t stop him from setting his personal best competitive height. Twenty-year-old B. Ezhilnilayan clocked 15:24.0 in winning the 5000m, slashing 6.2 seconds off the old record set in 2004-05 by another Loyolaite, Soji Mathew. He finished 25.4 seconds ahead of the second-placed M. Jayan of AM Jain. T. Balamurugan, 21, went 0.3 seconds quicker than M. Suresh of MCC in 1999-00, in completing the 400m hurdles in 53.6 seconds.

Defending overall champions Loyola and MOP Vaishnav head the men’s and women’s tables at the end of the first day with 32 and 44 points respectively, with MCC and Ethiraj in second place.
