Meet on skin disorders held

Staff Reporter

KOZHIKODE: ‘Dermachrome 2008,’ a meet on skin pigmentation disorders conducted by the Malabar Dermatology Club here on October 11 and 12 highlighted the social dimensions attached to the colour of human skin.

The continuing medical education (CME) initiative was also an occasion for dermatologists to know the latest techniques in the treatment of such disorders.

Former Professor and Head of the Department of Dermatology, Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, T. Gopinath, who inaugurated the workshop, said that ‘white collar’ and ‘white colour’ continued to dominate the thoughts of society.

Quoting Martin Luther King, Dr. Gopinath said a person ought to be evaluated on the basis of his/her calibre. There should be more research on skin pigmentation disorders, he said.

Indian Association of Dermatologists chairman Sachidanand (Bangalore) was the chief guest on the occasion.

The sessions included lectures, panel discussions and live demonstrations of surgical and cosmetic treatment. The skin condition of people of Indian origin and the increased use of beauty care products were highlighted. The social stigma and mental agony suffered by those with such disorders were discussed.

The workshop also discussed the use of lasers, chemical peels and derma rollers for excess pigmentation.

Delegates from across the country participated in the sessions.
