FOCUS ON HEALTH: Mayor Mercy Williams inaugurating the Ayurveda seminar organised by Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala in the city on Sunday. Arya Vaidya Sala’s chief physician and managing trustee P.K. Warrier is at left KOCHI: The 45th annual Ayurveda seminar, organised by the Arya Vaidya Sala, Kottakkal, was inaugurated here on Sunday by Kochi Mayor Mercy Williams. Addressing a gathering of about 750 delegates, the Mayor said that Ayurveda, which propagates holistic treatment for mind and body, is perhaps a means to alleviate the suffering of not just an individual but the entire society. Discussions on the subject, not limited to treatment modalities, can even bring about a national renewal as has been envisaged by the founder of the Arya Vaidya Sala, said its chief physician and managing trustee, Dr. P. K. Warrier, who presided over the function. K.V.P. Krishna Kumar, Corporation Councillor and Dr. T. T. Krishnakumar, District Medical Officer (ISM), spoke on the occasion. Dr. G.S. Raju from Thiruvananthapuram, delivered the keynote address on Ayurvedic hospital management. Papers were presented on the topic “snehana” and “svedana”, the therapeutic modalities of Ayurveda. Dr. K. Muraleedharan Pillai, professor and head of kayachikitsa, of Vishnu Ayurveda College, Shoranur, moderated the seminar. Dr. L. Mahadevan of Sree Sarada Ayurveda Hospital, Kanyakumari, and Dr. G. Syamakrishnan, medical officer, Government Ayurveda Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram, presented papers on “snehana” and “svedana” respectively. Dr. G. Vinod Kumar, head, department of panchakarma, Government Ayurveda College, Thiruvananthapuram, made a presentation on ‘Possible complications of snehana and svedana’. Prizes were given away for the 41st all-India Ayurveda essay competition to Radha Agarwal (first), Dr. Vinod Devraj (second) and Dr. Chris Antony (third). N.V.K. Varier endowment was awarded to Mousumi Manohar and Aparna S. Nair. Dr. K. Balachandran, superintendent, Arya Vaidya Sala, Thrikkakara, proposed a vote of thanks.
