BARASAT: Debutant Chirag United SC held Goa giant Churchill Brothers to a goalless draw in a third round I-League encounter at the Vidyasagar Stadium on Sunday. As city giant East Bengal and Mohun Bagan struggle at the bottom half of the league table, United SC continues to hold its own in the top half of the standings after the conclusion of the third round encounters. United SC now tallies four points after three matches while Churchill also has four, but after two outings. Churchill Brothers was fortunate to escape with a draw as the home side came close to scoring on numerous occasions. The Churchill Brothers custodian Arindam Bhattacharya made a few good saves and contributed to ensuring a barren scoreline. United SC found at least three positive openings in the first session but its attackers Raleng and Snehasish Chakraborty failed to find the mark. The home side continued its onslaught in the second session but that hardly made any difference with the finishing remaining poor as ever. Beginning with a loss against East Bengal in the first round, United SC recovered quickly to beat former champion Mahindra United in the second round before forcing Churchill Brothers to a draw. The unsung Kolkata side has managed to string together a side of big-team rejects into a potent force, banking on the experience of Subrata Bhattacharya, the former international who coached Mohun Bagan to two National League titles. — Principal Correspondent
