Skill training for women workers

Programme for construction workers launched by BAI

Shaping careers: Women workers in the construction industry learn how to paint at a training programme conducted recently by the Builders Association of India (South Centre) in Chennai recently.

CHENNAI: The Builders Association of India (South Centre) has started training programmes for unskilled women workers to impart skills required for the construction industry.

“The women have been deprived of the opportunity to effectively contribute to the industry. As they are unskilled, they get low wages. This initiative of providing training in painting, plumbing, electrical and carpentry works for women unskilled labourers will help them earn more. It will also contribute well to the construction industry,” said M.K.Sundaram, Chairman of the Builders Association of India (South Centre).

The first batch of trainees - a group of 30 uneducated women construction labourers - was imparted free training for a week recently.

One of the trainees, E.Sivamani (27), said the skills would help her family get more income.

She also wants to prove that women could be better contributors to the construction industry with necessary skills.

Her batchmate M.Valli (31) said that higher wages for her with better skills would give her family better nutrition and education.

“These women can also be useful in carrying out maintenance work in houses where women are alone during the day. This initiative can address the safety of women at homes where maintenance work is being carried out. The demand for women skilled workers will increase in future,” says Mr. Sundaram. The participants in the training programme are identified through the association members.
