Apropos, “Demolition drive continues” (The Hindu 5-10-2008), either the Chennai Corporation or the CMDA need not be a silent spectator to the owner constructing such an edifice (ground plus five floors) on Amman Koil Street in the busy area of Kondithope. Strictly speaking, the Assistant Engineer concerned, who revealed the violation of building rules by the owner, must be onerous for all this farcical episode, as reported. Authorities, who ordered the demolition drive on the building, could also initiate investigation and punish the offenders who perhaps indulged in patronising the building violation. K. Ramadoss Aynavaram Railway track crossingAt Tiruvallur Railway Station, aged people have difficulty crossing the railway track in between platforms 5 and 6 to catch the local suburban trains bound for Chennai Central and Beach. Sometimes they fall down and sustain injuries. It is, therefore, requested to lay the cement flooring on the tracks for easy passage. N.B.S. Manian Manavalanagar Underground drainage systemThere is no underground drainage system in the Gokulam Apartments at Nolambur. A sewage treatment plant has been installed to treat domestic waste water for drinking purposes. For want of adequate space, both the extraction wells and the injection wells are located close to each other with the risk of the recharged water mixing with the drainage water. Owing to the frequent failure of the sewage treatment plant, the sewage water overflows from the collection sumps and contaminates the ground water. As a result, a stinking smell emanates, off and on, from the stagnant drainage system, causing great inconvenience to the residents with the attendant health hazards, especially to children and senior citizensThis problem needs to be tackled effectively on priority basis by providing Metrowater connections and allowing the drainage water to flow through the existing underground drainage pipe on Sri Ram Nagar Main Road. Will the authorities concerned realise the gravity of the situation and take prompt action? A.S. Raman, Nolambur Black-topping neededA stretch of V.V. Colony, Brindavan Nagar Main Road, Adambakkam was in a bad condition with pits and boulders, sometime ago. The Corporation levelled it with red earth and pulverised blue metal. But, for the past many months, this stretch of the road remains in the same condition with loose blue metal, inconveniencing the vehicle-riders. As this stretch is used by a lot of vehicles to reach Anna Salai via Kakkan Bridge and Guindy Race Course and vice-versa throughout the day and also at night, immediate black-topping is urgently needed. Will the Corporation take action immediately? J. Manohar Singh, Adambakkam Law against spittingSpitting on public roads in Chennai has come to be regarded as one’s birthright, unmindful of the consequences to the environment. People have become so immune to these bad habits that no one ever complains or reacts. In our country, there should be strict laws against spitting and contaminating public places such as roads, bus-stands, railway stations, auto stands etc. Such laws protecting people’s health are in force in many European countries and the U.S. The media should educate the public on such bad habits. Schools also should educate the students in this regard. P.V. Srinivasan, Sastri Nagar Post constableWe are residing in Chitlapakkam on the eastern side of Tambaram Sanatorium Railway Station. It is a fast growing locality. After opening of the MIT road overbridge, vehicle users from Medavakkam, Selaiyur etc. pass through Chitlapakkam and the MIT bridge to reach Chromepet and beyond instead of using the circuitous route through Tambaram. Because of this, the junction near Varadaraja Theatre becomes heavily crowded and chaotic, particularly during office hours. Posting of a traffic constable at this junction would help in easing the congestion. We request the Chitlapakkam police station to post a traffic constable immediately at the Varadaraja Junction to regulate the traffic during office hours. S. Ranganathan Chitlapakkam TNEB collection centreThe TNEB collection centre functioning at Madipakkam is having eight counters. But only four counters are functioning and others have been closed for staff shortage. Recently, thousands of Ullagaram and Puzuthivakkam consumers are shifted to Madipakkam collection centres. The total TNEB consumer strength has exceeded more than 25,000 at the Madipakkam collection centre alone. With limited counters, the centre is always overcrowded everyday. TNEB authorities should make suitable arrangement to make all counters function for speedy collections. S. Kani Mozhi Madipakkam Street cleaningStreet cleaning is the fundamental service required in modern urban life. The four zones in Chennai City, in the hands of Neel Metal Fenalca, are highly disorganized in garbage collection. There is no systematic cleaning and the bins are overflowing. Streets, gutters and platform are not cleared of tree leaves and litters. Neel Metal is giving importance only to roads used by the VIPs. I suggest the following to improve the service: 1. There should be a co-ordination between the cleaning team and collecting team 2. A hand-held vacuum-type street cleaners should be provided to the staff (the department is understaffed) which will make the work easy and cover wider areas in shorter duration. 3. Members of the public can co-operate in taking pains to put the garbage inside the bin at least when they are empty. 4. There should be one representative from the public to be recognised by the authorities on each street who will co-ordinate with the Neel Metal supervisor for smooth functioning. 5. Additionally each house can be provided containers where the garbage is collected and kept ready for emptying into the garbage collecting vehicle once a week. This can reduce overflowing road side bins. The neatness of our colony is a reflection of our civilization. Dr. R. Chandrasekaran, Emeritus Professor The T.N. Dr. MGR Medical University
