Desilting of drain network, shifting of TASMAC outlet sought

CHENNAI: Various issues, including the need to desilt and expand stormwater drain network and shift a liquor outlet, were discussed at a public grievance meeting organised by Guindy Exnora Innovators Club here on Sunday. Mayor M. Subramanian chaired the meeting.

S. Srinivasan, resident of Secretariat Colony, wanted the Corporation to construct a stormwater drain on the eastern side of the City Limit Road and link it to the Velachery Lake to prevent flooding .

He said that as the residential colonies on the western side of the road were on a higher level, construction of a stormwater drain would help to prevent stagnation of rainwater on the roads.

Sushila Krishnamurthy, a resident of Pillayar Koil Street, complained that in the absence of a post box in the locality many senior citizens were forced to walk for over two km to the Balakrishnapuram post office.

P.M. Gopinath said that even though there is a bus terminus at NGO Colony, Adambakkam, the Metropolitan Transport Corporation buses never use it, forcing the commuters to wait on the narrow road.

The terminus is being used as a parking space by private vehicles.

K. Palaniappan, president, Guindy Exnora Innovators’ Club, complained about traffic bottleneck caused by the parking of two-wheelers by customers visiting a TASMAC shop on City Limit Road.

Citing nuisance caused by the customers, he said the residents wanted the shop to be either shifted or closed.

The residents of Secretariat Colony submitted a memorandum to the Mayor, seeking more funds from the Corporation for maintenance of a park in the locality.

Mr. Subramanian assured the residents of necessary action within a fortnight.
