What they say

Sheela Rani Chunkath

Sheela Rani Chunkath, Convener, Expert Committee, Solid Waste Management, Pallikaranai Marsh Land:

There has been an overwhelming response from the public against the dumping of garbage in the Pallikaranai Marsh Land. Though the huge garbage generation and space constraints pose challenges to the Chennai Corporation, there still is a way out to handle the problem of dumping and save the marsh land.

The burning of garbage is an issue that is being viewed seriously, as it emits dioxins, a highly toxic substance, causing serious health hazards. Use of the marsh as a landfill has also affected the groundwater.
