New farm implements for Kadayam block

For System of Rice Intensification method



HANDY: Farm implements being introduced to farmers at Lakshmiyoor in Kadayam block.

TIRUNELVELI: New and improved farm implements were introduced in the district during the inauguration of a farm school training programme conducted under ATMA (Agricultural Technology Management Agency) Scheme at Lakshmioor in Kadayam block on Friday.

Joint Director of Agriculture, Tirunelveli, S. Veluchami, introduced the implements which are largely used in paddy cultivation under System of Rice Intensification method.

Direct seed sowing implement for paddy, different types of markers, cono-weeders and seed frame used in System of Rice Intensification planting were displayed and their functioning demonstrated to the participants.

The Department of Agriculture is vigorously engaged in propagating SRI method of paddy cultivation to increase the production of the foodgrain. For effectively spreading this method in a remarkably short period, Tamilnadu Women in Agriculture group leaders from Sivasailam, Vaagaikulam, Meenakshipuram, Rajangapuram, Katteripatti, Therkumadathoor and Kovilooththu villages of Kadayam block were taken to the farm of one Manavaalan at Lakshmioor and trained in using the improved farm implements used in SRI technique.

Moreover, these participants will be taken to the same farm on five different occasions to ascertain the paddy crop stages. Apart from getting practical knowledge, they get the opportunity to interact with the host farmer and share his experience.

“The group leaders, after this exposure visit, are expected to take this knowledge to their villages and share it with others,” said J. Edgar Gonsalves, Assistant Director of Agriculture, Kadayam, who is the organiser of this farm school and demonstrated nursery preparation.

On the inaugural day of the training programme, Soundararajan, Assistant Director of Agriculture (Quality Control), Tirunelveli, and Rajasekar, Agriculture Officer, Tirunelveli, trained the participants.
