Measures needed to protect water bodies - Reader's Mail

It seems water will be more precious than gold in the near future. Most of the people do not know that they are wasting a valuable thing. At present, water bodies like tanks and pools are being filled up for constructing residential and commercial complexes. As a result, the problem of shortage of drinking water has been increasing day by day. The trend of destroying water bodies is limited not only to metropolitan cities, but also reached small towns.

Since the land value has been increased manifold, people seem to be under the impression that allotting land for water bodies is a mere waste. If the situation continues to be like this, we may have to witness wars for water. The government should take steps not only to protect water bodies, but also to find out alternatives to reduce water consumption in agriculture.

Disturbing trend

With the general elections approaching fast, jubilance has started among the cadre of different political outfits. The emergence of new political parties has created a sort of uncertainty in the existing outfits. Even the senior and experienced leaders are resorting to the most unwanted jibing and making vitriolic speeches with full of diatribe. This is an unfortunate development.

Against this background, the criticism, which is normal in politics, should be constructive and it should not target either the person or the profession from which he/she comes from. Senior leaders should realise that the experience is gained only after entering into politics and no one is a born politician. They must desist from making vitriolic speeches.

Shortage of teachers

Editor-in-Chief of The Hindu N. Ram has recently spoken about ‘critical shortage of qualified teachers’ while addressing a meeting organised by VIT University at Vellore. We must thank Mr. Ram for expressing his views boldly. Salary and perks being offered by different educational institutions is one of the reasons for the exodus of teachers. At times, due to financial crunch, appointment of lecturers on regular basis is stopped in government educational institutions.

Those who are appointed on part-time or contract basis are working like bonded labourers. How can one expect teachers of this category to give their best? As the number of professional colleges has increased in the recent past, many institutions are recruiting either fresh graduates or those who have already retired from the profession as teachers. Age factor also plays a vital role in enforcing discipline.

An overhaul of the entire system of education seems to be the need of the day.

Provide good faculty to polytechnics

It is heartening to note that the government has sanctioned a good number of polytechnic colleges in the State nearly after two decades. As Intermediate education has become costlier due to corporate colleges, students from middleclass background would benefit from these new government polytechnic colleges.

Besides providing benefits like fee concession and scholarships, the government should also ensure qualitative technical education. To overcome the problem of shortage of technical faculty, the government is recruiting staff. The government can utilise the services of the faculty of aided polytechnics, on the lines of using the services of lecturers of aided junior colleges.

It will not only reduce the burden of grant-in-aid on the government, but also provide experienced faculty to the students of new polytechnic colleges.
