Tough to implement - Reader's Mail

The Supreme Court ruling that that cigarette smoking is injurious to health and the consequent ban in public places such as in front of schools, colleges, parks, roads and other crowd areas is welcome .

Further it is learnt that a heavy fine will be imposed by the police if caught red-handed by any person. Actually it will be very difficult to implement the rule as nowadays cigarettes and paan are being sold in every shop.

Also it seems only the poor and innocent people will be caught. It would be more helpful if the Government bans the manufacturing and selling of the above products so that there will be a chance to control the use of tobacco. . Otherwise there is no use of banning the products which are really injurious to health.

Vote bank politics

I find it difficult to fathom why Amar Singh, general secretary of Samajwadi Party, was able to see a conspiracy angle in the encounter at an apartment at New Delhi -- where some alleged terrorists were killed in an encounter -- while the majority of rational people could not find anything wrong with it.

With every passing day Amar Singh is discovering new ways to remain in the public gaze and media spotlight. The SP leader should have thought better than to stir up something that would impact the morale of the police and security forces. Obviously he seems to be concerned only with increasing his vote bank.

Top leadership of the Congress, including Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh, restrained themselves from commenting upon the issue fearing that it might end up with breaking of alliance.

One will not be surprised even if the SP leader says that Osama Bin Laden is not a terrorist but an innocent chap who is a victim of American hegemony!
