CHENNAI: The Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) has decided to boycott the all-party meeting convened by the government on October 14 to find a solution to the killing of Sri Lankan Tamils. In a press release issued here on Sunday, DMDK leader Vijayakant said the government was conducting the meeting to divert the people’s attention from issues that it had got entangled with such as power cut, inflation and telecommunication corruption. Therefore, the DMDK would not take part in the meeting. Moreover, Mr. Karunanidhi had not created a suitable condition wherein all parties could take part. Mr. Vijayakant said it was not clear why Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had convened the meeting when his allies were ruling the country right from the Centre to local bodies. Hence, whatever help could be offered to the Sri Lankan Tamils should be done at the earliest. “When the Indian government could have a dialogue with banned National Socialist Council of Nagaland to find a political solution, why can’t the State government insist the Sri Lanka government to follow the same steps?” he asked. Knowing fully well that there was no point in dragging the issue further, Mr. Karunanidhi should use his influence and arrive at a political solution at the earliest, he said. Mr. Vijayakant said they did not wish to support All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa for beefing up her personal security citing LTTE and at the same time, he criticised the Centre and the supportive State government for discreetly helping Sri Lankan army to carry out offensive against Sri Lankan Tamils.
