“Congress to strengthen base in Tamil Nadu”

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: As the countdown for the Lok Sabha polls has begun, the priority of the Congress is to strengthen its base in Tamil Nadu and “any addition to and deletion from the alliance” will be decided at the time of elections, AICC secretary in-charge-of Tamil Nadu K.B. Krishnamoorthy said on Sunday.

Mr. Krishnamoorthy, who was here to chair a meeting with functionaries of the Youth congress, Mahila Congress and NSUI, told reporters that the present alliance formed during the 2004 Lok Sabha polls was likely to continue for the next elections.

Asked about sharing of power in Tamil Nadu, TNCC president K.V. Thangkabalu, who was present at the press conference, said the issue had been left to AICC president Sonia Gandhi.

Mr. Krishnamoorthy said the party was working out a strategy to involve various frontal organisations, especially the Youth Congress, students’ wing and Mahila Congress, in taking the Congress-led UPA government’s achievements to the people.

He said the party would focus on the Right to Information Act, the Rural Employment Guarantee Act and the Indo-US nuclear deal.

Stating that the Congress was functioning effectively in the State, Mr. Krishnamoorthy said office-bearers for the party would be appointed soon. “I have already toured some districts. I am going to visit other districts. Based on the feedback received during the interaction we will make appointments,” he said.

Later addressing party functionaries, Mr. Thangkabalu said that the Congress would repeat its performance of the 2004 Lok Sabha elections in the coming elections too. “The alliance in which the Congress is a partner will alone win the elections,” he added.
