Good posture, ergonomics at workplace go a long way in preventing arthritis

Programme sheds light on preventive measures and treatment

CHENNAI: Many people think that arthritis is a normal part of ageing like greying of hair but it is not the case, orthopaedic surgeons said here.

Chettinad Health City on Saturday conducted a programme to promote awareness of arthritis, prevention and treatment. The event was organised to mark World Arthritis Day on Sunday.

Consultant orthopaedic surgeon M. Venkataraman said, “People continue to live with pain, thinking that it is part of the aging process. But, the pain can cripple them and confine them to home.”

Dr. Venkataraman said that exercises could help persons with arthritis to reduce pain. Modern implant designs and improved surgical post operative care was available now, he said.

“Modern implants can last a lifetime. Earlier, we hesitated to operate young persons with arthritis. But now, they can benefit from surgeries,” Dr. Venkataraman said. Young persons could be affected by arthritis due to traumatic injuries at the joints.

J. Vishnu Mohan, the hospital’s specialist in preventive industrial and occupational health, said that good posture and ergonomics at the workplace could go a long way in preventing arthritis.

Stress on some ligaments and joints due to repetitive tasks could cause wear and tear, he said.

Physiotherapist S. Rajarajeshwari recommended exercises and weight training under the guidance of a supervisor to combat arthritis, and the associated immobility and a loss of balance. “Exercises will strengthen the muscles and improve the range of movement,” she said.

This year, the theme for World Arthritis Day is ‘think positive’. Living with chronic pain can stir emotions like anger, resentment and depression. The theme underlines the importance of being optimistic in combating arthritis.
