CURBING VIOLATIONS: A view of the partly demolished building at Rattan Bazaar. CHENNAI: The demolition drive against unauthorised constructions continued on Saturday with Chennai Corporation workers breaking the walls of a five-floor building near Parry’s Corner. The Corporation had given planning permission for only the ground floor plus one storey. But the building had five storeys. Workers demolished the second, third and fourth floors using drilling and gas cutting machines to cut through concrete and iron. The action follows a survey made by the Corporation and the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) that identified 30 buildings for demolition. Seventeen of the buildings are in violation of the Corporation’s planning permission and the rest are being reviewed by the CMDA. The survey examined only buildings in prominent places and which were constructed after July 27, 2007. The five-floor building, owned by M. Mohammed and a few others, was located at Rattan Bazaar near the Flower Bazaar police station. The ground and first floors were used by a cosmetics and gifts store. The other floors were yet to be used. The Corporation has already demolished a few unauthorised constructions in Mint, Sowcarpet and Anna Nagar West in the past week.
