NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit laid the foundation stone for the new campus of the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) in Okhla Industrial Estate Phase III here on Saturday. The Institute had become operational in August when its admission brochure for the year 2008-09 was released. Viewing the establishment of IIIT in Delhi as a move that would give a fillip to acceptability of IT that has ensured transparency and helped in developing a new work culture, Ms. Dikshit said her government wants to make the Institute a truly world-class centre of learning and hoped it would make the whole country proud. Stating that the Institute would attract faculty and students from across the world, Ms. Dikshit added that it would gain international status. The function was attended by area MLA Parvez Hashmi, Secretary (Training and Technical Education ) G. Narendra Kumar and the Board of Directors of IIIT. IIIT Delhi has started functioning from this academic year itself, temporarily using facilities provided by NSIT in Dwarka. Its permanent campus is now being constructed in Okhla and it would focus on specific domain areas and on software products. Leveraging fully its location advantage, IIIT Delhi will look at IT in relation to areas like e-governance, defence applications, life sciences, technology-led education, finance, automobile engineering and mobile computing. It will be a research-led institute with B.Tech, M.Tech, and Ph.D programmes. The endeavour would be to prepare its students to create new products for and from the country. Integrating humanities and community work in its educational process, the Institute would seek to develop socially conscious and better integrated engineers of the highest calibre.
