‘Educate people on first aid’

Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE: Hindi film actor Jackie Shroff on Friday suggested to the medical students to create awareness among people about first aid.

He was speaking at the inaugural function of the fourth Indo-U.S. emergency medicine summit hosted by a private hospital here.

Recalling the deaths of his brother and mother, he said they could have probably been saved if he knew first aid. He said that he was 10-year-old when he saw his 17-year-old brother drowned. He was clueless when his mother suffered a heart attack and died.

Mr. Shroff said that many people did not know how to do first aid during emergency. Medical students could teach people about such methods by organising awareness camps in their localities, he said. O.P. Kalra, dean, University Institute of Medical Sciences, said that there was a need to promote emergency medicine as a specialised branch. Efficiency of a hospital was reflected in its handling of emergency cases.

Stating that emergency medicine was in its infancy in the country, he said that efforts should be made to include it in the curriculum of postgraduate and undergraduate courses of medicine.
