Education system outdated: scholar

KOCHI: The British system of education, originally created for training slaves, is still retained in India, while the British system was revised in the early 20th century, said historian M.G.S. Narayanan.

He was delivering the Jayaprakash Narayanan commemorative lecture at the meeting organised by the Indian Socialist Lawyers’ Organisation (ISLO) at the Bar Council auditorium here on Saturday.

The higher education system in India has degenerated to being a degree factory, he said. Speaking on the subject ‘contribution of Ayyankali and Narayana Guru in the renaissance of modern Kerala society’, Mr. Narayanan said that as there had never been repressions in Kerala society, it witnessed only communal reforms and not renaissance.

In taking up the reforms, Narayana Guru followed the policies of Gandhiji.

The people thought that Jayaprakash Narayan would succeed Nehru in leading the nation. But Indira Gandhi’s rise to power changed it, Dr. Narayanan said. T. Krishnanunni, president, ISLO, presided and Cheriyan Varghese and M.N. Raveendran, secretaries, ISLO, spoke.
