KHAMMAM: Five persons were killed when the lorry in which they were travelling overturned after hitting a culvert near Sathupalli on the Khammam–Devarpalli state highway in the early hours on Saturday.

Four others, including the lorry driver and cleaner, escaped with minor injuries. The lorry, which was on its way from Visakhapatnam to Medchal was laden with building material. Those who were trapped under the metal chips died out of suffocation.

The police and the ambulance staff removed the bodies. The deceased were identified as Orla Srinu (20), Ganti Pandu (20), Maduru Pushkarudu (25), Elle Srinu (23) and Titta Srinu (20).

All of them belonged to Madduru village in West Godavari district. They had boarded the lorry at Vijjeswaram and were bound for Tallada for purchase of papayas.

They were asleep when the lorry met with the accident around 3.45 am. Bandi Philip, one of the survivors, said that it all happened in a split second.

There was no possibility of saving those trapped under the lorry. The bodies were sent for post-mortem.
