Jet Airways apologises to Kuldip Nayar

NEW DELHI: Jet Airways has expressed “deep regret” and publically apologised to veteran journalist Kuldip Nayar for an incident that took place at Amritsar airport in March this year.

Mr. Nayar, a former Rajya Sabha member who has also served as India’s High Commissioner to Britain, had moved the Delhi State Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission against the airline’s callousness.

The Commission had issued a notice to the private air carrier on Mr. Nayar’s plea seeking a compensation of Rs.75 lakh for deficiency in service that caused him great inconvenience.

‘Matter settled’

A Jet Airways spokesperson said on Saturday that Mr. Nayar had sought a public apology for the incident and that “the matter had now been settled”.

Mr. Nayar had booked a seat on a Jet Airways flight from Amritsar to Delhi on his way back from Pakistan on March 9 this year.

The airline staff at Amritsar airport issued him a boarding pass, but minutes later an official asked Mr. Nayar to return the pass as there was “some error” in it.

After half an hour, they told him that they had issued a fresh boarding pass in his name.

When Mr. Nayar reached the security check area to board the plane, the airline manager informed him, much to his shock, that the flight had taken off.

Mr. Nayar told The Hindu on Saturday that he had told the Commission that if the airline issued a public apology he would withdraw the case.

Goyal calls up Nayar

“Naresh Goyal (Jet Airways chief) called me up and apologised. Some of their top executives from Mumbai also came to my house and apologised. But I told them that as the matter had appeared in the Press, they must apologise publicly,” he said.

“My feeling is that they (airline staff) generally do not bother about such things. After I moved the consumer court, they must have been advised by their lawyers to apologise to me,” he added.
