On 12th October 2008 the Two Thousand Years old Church in India will witness a historic event when Pope Benedict XVI elevates a simple Clarist nun to the rank of saints. It is with a great sense of joy and gratitude to Almighty God that the priests, religious and lay faithful of diocese of Marthandam received this news of Blessed Alphonsa’s canonization.

Blessed Alphonsa’s complete surrender to God’s will, simple and joyous attitude and smile of innocence in the midst of pain and hardships, is an example for the entire world. Today when the Christian community in India is going through hard times and sees suffering as an unwelcome cross which should be avoided at all costs, Blessed Alphonsa’s life teaches us the salvific value of suffering.

May the life of Blessed Alphonsa, the contemplative mystic and India’s first woman saint, radiate the fragrance of love, service and sacrifice and be a perennial source of inspiration and strength for the people.

May her intercession be a great blessing for our families and our Church.
