White Paper planned on linking of rivers

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: The Geological Society of India (GSI) will bring out a “White Paper” on the scientific aspects of the proposal regarding interlinking of rivers in the country.

The initiative will take a look at the proposal only from the scientific angle and examine issues such as ecological and hydrological aspects, according to GSI president H. K. Gupta.

He said at a press conference in Bangalore on Saturday that the details regarding the outcome of an initial study regarding interlinking of rivers would be put on the website to get reactions from technical and research personnel. The study would try to find out the advantages and disadvantages of the interlinking of rivers. The GSI is in touch with Magsaysay award-winner Rajendra Singh regarding the proposal.

Meanwhile, earth scientists from India and abroad will be in Bangalore to attend a two-day technical session on “Recent trends in Earth Sciences” being organised by the GSI from October 12, to mark its golden jubilee. Nearly 500 delegates are participating in the technical sessions in which scientists will deliver talks on the trends in earth sciences.

Mr. Gupta said that as part of its golden jubilee celebrations, the GSI would release five commemorative volumes comprising research papers and articles that had influenced new thinking in some of the critical areas in earth sciences.

The technical session will commence at 11.50 a.m. at the National Science Seminar Complex of the Indian Institute of Science.
