Driver gets RI for rape

MADURAI: Mahila Court Judge E. M. K. S. Siddharthar on Friday sentenced an accused to undergo 10 years rigorous imprisonment concurrently under charges of kidnap and rape of a college girl.

According to the prosecution, the accused, Kaaturaja alias Malairaja (28) of Hanumarpatti, Vandiyur, a mini bus driver, had kidnapped a college student to an undisclosed destination in Thanjavur in May 2005 and raped the victim.

Following a complaint from the victim’s mother, the Karupayoorani police registered a case and arrested the accused.

Based on his confession, kidnap and rape cases were registered against him.

He was sentenced to undergo concurrently 10 year rigorous imprisonment on each count and a fine of Rs 1,000 was imposed on him. His accomplice was acquitted. In the event of default, the Judge ordered another one year of rigorous imprisonment.
