Kota (Udupi district): Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa said on Friday that the Government would release Rs. 1 crore for the construction of Shivaram Karanth memorial at Kota village in Udupi district.

He was speaking after presenting the “Karanth Hutturu Prashasti” to Ravi Belagere, a journalist, and inaugurating a conference of the members of local bodies. Stating that the Government would provide a one-acre plot for the memorial, Mr. Yeddyurappa said that the Deputy Commissioner had been directed to take action in this regard. The Rs. 1-crore grant would be made available from the Department of Tourism, he added.

He said that late Dr. Shivaram Karanth was one of the greatest litterateurs of the State. His contribution to Kannada literature was invaluable. The multi-faceted Karanth had given new dimension to the art-form of Yakshagana and made it known to people in other countries too. Karanth’s contribution to Kannada writing in science and children’s literature was well documented. His novels, with their rich narrative, had brought alive the conditions of the coastal region to readers.

It was in recognition of his contribution to Kannada literature that he was conferred the Jnanpith Award. A man of principles, Karanth fought for the conservation of Hampi, he said.

The Chief Minister said that his Government had allocated Rs. 184 crore for the Department of Kannada and Culture. It had approved four cultural complexes across the State and allocated Rs. 1 crore each for the development of Bada village in Haveri district, the birthplace of the saint-composer Kanakadasa, and the K.P. Poornachandra Tejaswi Research Centre. The Government had sanctioned Rs. 25 crore for the World Kannada Conference to be held in Belgaum and Rs. 5 crore for the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre in Mysore, he said.

Mr. Yeddyurappa said that the administration had been taken to the doorsteps of people through decentralisation. It was up to the members of zilla panchayats, taluk panchayats and gram panchayats to oversee the implementation of government programmes. The district administration had been told to conduct hobli-level meetings.

The Government would give more importance to rural development in the next three years. “Terrorism, conversion and corruption were the three major problems facing the State,” Mr. Yeddyurappa said.Home Minister V.S. Acharya and MLAs Halady Srinivas Shetty, Raghupati Bhat and Lalaji Mendan were present.
