Chennai
for breaking rules: Demolition of the illegal portions of a building in Sowcarpet in progress on Friday. — CHENNAI: The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) with the assistance of the Chennai Corporation on Friday continued its demolition drive against illegal constructions in different parts of the city. A portion of a residential building in Anna Nagar West was demolished by the civic body for violating the Development Control Rules (DCR). At Sowcarpet, three floors of a five floor building on Aayanur Muthiah Street, which did not have approval, were demolished. Corporation officials at the building demolition in Anna Nagar said while the approval was given only for ground and first floors, the owner had built three additional floors about two years ago . The ground and first floors of the building in Thirumoolar Nagar, Anna Nagar West, were built a decade ago, an official said. The demolition process would continue for a few more days. A few other multi-storeyed buildings in Anna Nagar that have violated DCR have been identified for demolition in the coming weeks, he said. The building in Sowcarpet had permission for only the ground and first floors. CMDA officials said the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board and Chennai Metrowater had given service connections to the building without the CMDA’s completion certificate. The certificate was necessary as the building is classified as special, having more than three floors. The CMDA will collect the demolition charges from the owners.
