Berhampur: The central security force personnel deployed to maintain law and order in Orissa’s riot-hit Kandhamal district are facing a new challenge, malaria which has claimed the life of two of them and afflicted 25 others. While two jawans were suspected to have succumbed to the disease, at least 25 others are in different medical centres in the district fighting malaria. H S Manohar (38) of the B-63 battalion of Chhatisgarh died of supected malaria. He was deployed at Kurtamgarh to maintan law and order. Doubtful casueAnother jawan, identified as Sohanbir Singh of 170-D battalion of Chhatisgarh died on October 6 at G Udayagiri. The authorities of the hospital, where he underwent treatment, said he died of cardiac failure but his colleagues claimed he was suffering from malaria. With winter round the corner and the hill and forest areas of the tribal district already feeling the night chill, the security personnel apprehended the disease would afflict many more of them. - PTI
