BJP sweeps Zila Panchayat chiefs polls

C. K. Chandramohan

DEHRA DUN: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party swept the Zila Panchayat presidents’ elections in Uttarakhand on Friday with the candidates supported by it winning nine out of the 12 seats at stake. The Congress won just two, while the Dehra Dun seat was bagged by an independent, Madhu Chauhan, wife of BJP MLA Munna Singh Chauhan.

Describing the victory as a verdict on the functioning of his government, Chief Minister Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri said he was more than happy to learn that the people liked the policies of the BJP Government.

Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, Minister for Health and Science and Technology, said that the graph of the BJP was going up and the party would win all the Lok Sabha seats from the State during the next general elections.

The BJP succeeded in cornering the Chamoli seat after the wife of Sports Minister Rajender Singh Bhandari withdrew her candidature in favour of the party nominee.

Mr. Bhandari, an independent MLA, agreed to ask his wife to withdraw from the race after Mr. Khanduri and Mr. Nishank took him for talks with the top leadership in New Delhi on Thursday.
