NAGAPPATTINAM: The shortfall in samba cultivation area this year will be met in the next 7 to 8 days, District Collector M. Jayaraman has said. TeamsAddressing a special grievance meeting for farmers in the tail-end of the delta region, Mr. Jayaraman said that the administration had appointed 73 teams for the Cauvery canals and 20 teams for the Vennar canals to ensure that proper flow was being maintained. He instructed Joint Engineers and other senior officials from the Public Works Department to regularly visit the areas to ensure that farmers benefited from the irrigation. He noted that last year, around the same time, over 49,000 hectares had already been cultivated while only about 43,000 hectares had been cultivated this year. This was due to a variety of problems including the power situation and the silt formation in many canals, farmers told the Collector. The Collector asked the engineers to take up desilting and removal of obstructions in the canals immediately, and also to divert flows from already irrigated areas to fields which had not received water until now. Contact in case of emergenciesHe asked farmers to bring to his notice all their problems immediately and asked them to contact the divisional offices at Tiruvarur division (Phone number: 04366-241347), and Mayiladuthurai division (Phone number: 04364-225904) in case of emergencies.
