CHANDIGARH: Five police officers, including two Station House Officers, have been suspended by the Chandigarh police for alleged failure to control the drug menace in the city and “discrepancies in performing prime duties regarding crime control and law and order in their respective jurisdiction”. According to an official spokesman, Inspector Rajesh Shukla and Inspector Davinder Kumar Sharma were suspended on Wednesday night. It is alleged that Inspector Sharma “covered up the lapse and involvement of a police official with drug peddlers”. The spokesman added that Head Constable Sanjeev Kumar and Constable Kuldeep Singh and Constable Sewa Singh were also suspended for “disobeying the orders of the senior officers”. Sources disclosed that disciplinary action was initiated against Inspector Sharma for allegedly covering up “involvement” of one Head Constable Baljit Singh with drug peddlers. A departmental enquiry has also been ordered against six other cops, including a sub-inspector. They were suspended in August after their names reportedly figured in investigations by the Narcotics Control Bureau.
