Bangalore: The Janata Dal (Secular) has demanded that the State Government publish a White Paper on its financial position in the light of the announcement of a number of new power projects, contradicting its own admission about the paucity of funds. Party MLC and spokesperson Y.S.V. Datta told presspersons here on Friday that the Government had announced a series of new projects and programmes on the power and irrigation fronts, the total cost of which would amount to an estimated Rs. one lakh crore. These announcements contradicted the ground realities. The Government’s style of functioning was not only confusing the people but also giving room for apprehensions. Therefore, the Government should clarify matters by publishing a White Paper on its financial position, he said. Work on major irrigation projects such as Upper Krishna, Upper Tunga and Bhadra had come to a standstill because of paucity of funds. Even contractors, who were always after the Government to get the schemes sanctioned, were now shying away, he charged. Mr. Datta said the party would observe three days of mourning at all its district and taluk offices beginning Friday as mark of respect to State party president Mirajuddin Patel, who died recently. A State-level condolence function would be held in here on October 13 in which party leaders H. D. Deve Gowda, H.D. Kumaraswamy and others would participate.
