CHENNAI: A total of 750 doctors will be appointed next week to fill up vacancies in primary health centres, district and taluk-level hospitals, Health Minister MRK Panneerselvam said on Friday.

The appointments would be finalised by October 15, Mr.Panneerselvam added, speaking at the inaugural of the State Campaign on Homeopathy for Mother and Child Care, organised by the Directorate of Indian Medicine and Homeopathy and Department of AYUSH, Ministry of Health. He said over 4,000 doctors had been appointed over the last couple of years and 1,200 nurses were appointed last week.

Just over 1,000 doctors were working in the Indian systems of medicine and homeopathy, he said. Homeopathy had a key role in promoting mother and child health but currently in Tamil Nadu there was a need to spread awareness of the possibilities in that system of medicine. It would have to be promoted like Siddha medicine.

The government had sanctioned 23 posts for the homeopathy teaching college at Tirumangalam, Health Secretary V.K.Subburaj said. Practitioners of homeopathy should ensure in spreading the message that there were no side effects in using the mode of treatment and it was cost-effective.

Union Minister of State for Health Panabaka Lakshmi said the allotment for the AYUSH systems of medicine would be enhanced substantially in the next five-year plan.

Homeopathy had the advantage of being able to treat patients even in sensitive conditions such as pregnancy and lactation.

A website to promote homeopathy for mother and child health was inaugurated.
