Essay competition for differently-abled

Staff Reporter

20 cash awards to be given to winners

NEW DELHI: To mark World Disability Day, Chennai-based non-government organisation Nandini Voice for the Deprived has announced an all-India essay competition for differently-abled persons across the country.

Titled “Expectations of the disabled persons and their suggestions on support schemes”, the competition is open to all physically challenged persons irrespective of age or educational background.

The essay should not exceed 1,000 words and can be written in English, Hindi or Tamil. The visually-impaired can write the essay in Braille language or send an audio cassette.

Those who have had no education and cannot write an essay can send their views on audio cassettes. Twenty cash awards will be presented to winners.

Noting that more than 2 per cent of the national population constituting disabled persons consists of orthopedically disabled, visually impaired, hearing/speech-impaired and mentally-ill, Nandini Voice for the Deprived trustee N. S. Venkataraman said that in Tamil Nadu alone there are about 1.7 million disabled persons.

“While there are a number of governmental schemes and several non-government organisations are extending support measures to disabled persons, still a solution to their problems in full measure is nowhere in sight,” he said.

The essays for the competition have to be despatched by post on or before November 15 to N. S. Venkataraman, Nandini Voice for the Deprived, M 60/1, 4th Cross Street, Besant Nagar, Chennai. They can also be e-mailed to nsvenkat@md4.vsnl.net.in
