MADURAI: Madurai Kamaraj University would present ‘Tamil Semmal’ awards for 2007 and 2008 to two eminent persons who contributed to the promotion of Tamil language and literature. A five-member committee, including Vice-Chancellor R. Karpaga Kumaravel and Higher Education Secretary K. Ganesan, has been formed to select the awardees. Dr. Karpaga Kumaravel told reporters here on Friday that the committee would meet at the secretariat in Chennai on October 18 to decide on the names of two recipients. Other members of the committee are V. C. Kulandaisamy, former Vice-Chancellor of Anna University; M. Rajendran, Vice-Chancellor of Tamil University and N. R. Mohan, MKU Syndicate member and Head of Tamil Department. Science awardsThe university is also taking steps to present Indian Science Congress Awards to four researchers in the fields of life sciences and material sciences. According to Dr. Karpaga Kumaravel, the university has written to the University Grants Commission with regard to taking steps for Career Advancement Scheme for the university teaching staff. “We want to complete the process by December so that teaching faculty members will benefit from the pay review recommendations made by the UGC committee for university teachers,” the Vice-Chancellor said.
