PALAKKAD: The Southern Railway has achieved a record in freight earnings, of 21 per cent growth over the previous year in the first six months of the financial year 2008-09. A press release from the Palakkad Railway Division here on Friday said freight loading between April and September 2008 was 16.8 million tonnes, 9 per cent above the target set by the Ministry of Railways. It said loading had improved in all commodities barring petroleum products, which was primarily due to the shutdown of the CPCL Refinery at Manali. The release said all divisions of the Southern Railway had achieved high growth in different commodities. The Palakkad and Madurai divisions had registered 300 and 200 per cent growth respectively in coal loading. The movement of coal from the Mangalore Port to power houses in Andhra Pradesh had contributed to this increase. Coal has also moved from Tuticorin Port to the new steel plant of Jindal at Mecheri Road, near Salem. The marketed traffic of steel from the Salem Division crossed 1 lakh tonnes for the first time on this railway. The Trichy Division registered 90 per cent increase in the loading of cement from various plants of the Tamil Nadu cluster located in its jurisdiction.
