Belgaum
MLC to strive for development of backward areas Rs. 2,547 crore to implement panel’s recommendations Belgaum: Shashil G. Namoshi, MLC and Chairman of the high power committee for the implementation of recommendations of the D.M. Nanjundappa Committee on Removal of Regional Imbalances, said on Friday that proper utilisation of funds and speedy implementation of development schemes would be his priority towards bridging the gap between backward and developed taluks in the State. Addressing presspersons here, he said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Government had set up the committee with a view to ensuring speedy implementation of development schemes for which funds had been allocated in the budget. He said that Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa would appoint other members of the committee soon. The members to be appointed would comprise experts, administrators and two persons who had represented the committee headed by D.M. Nanjundappa. There would be one non-official member from each of the four revenue divisions of the State. The non-official members would be from the BJP. He said though the Congress Government headed by S.M. Krishna set up the committee and approved its recommendations, it was the Janata Dal (S)-BJP coalition Government which made a budgetary allocation of Rs. 1,571 crore when Mr. Yeddyurappa was Deputy Chief Minister during 2007-08. But owing to the collapse of the Government, the entire allocation was not utilised. Only Rs. 933 crore, accounting for 59 per cent of the total allocation, was utilised and the rest lapsed. This year, the Government allocated Rs. 2,547 crore to implement the recommendations. He said the Nanjundappa committee had considered taluk as a unit for its study and made recommendations for removal of imbalances accordingly. It had identified 39 taluks as “most backward”, 40 as “more backward” and 35 as “backward”.
