MADURAI: With the objective of providing a platform to budding women film directors and to highlight their work in the field of alternative cinema, Second International Women Directors’ Film Festival was inaugurated here on Friday. The two-day ‘Penn Thirai – 2008’ is organised by the Media Research Centre, Department of Philosophy, Madura College, and ‘Koodu – Women Readers’ Forum.’ It features 20 short films, documentaries and feature films from various nations such as Russia, Spain, United States and United Kingdom. Gujarati and Tamil movies will also be screened. Although the film fest highlights the contribution of women, the films deal with a wide array of social issues. Students from various colleges in the State have been invited to participate in the festival. An interactive session of first-time directors has been scheduled for Saturday. In her inaugural address, Aruna Sivakami, Vice-Chancellor of Mother Teresa Women’s University, Kodaikanal, observed that sensationalisation of non-issues and trivialisation had become the order of the day. Social issues and solutions to those problems did not find much place, she said, adding that in the degradation of society, the media seemed to play a major role. Women should be prepared to do justice to the institutions they worked. College Principal T.V. Krishnamoorthy said that alternative cinema would provide an idea of what a good movie was.
