The damaged glass panel of the pulpit of the church at Anna Nagar. CHENNAI: The police have beefed up security for churches and other Christian institutions in Tamil Nadu in the wake of attacks on Christians and churches in Orissa and Karnataka, DGP K.P. Jain said. A press release from the DGP said so far 22 persons had been arrested in connection with the attacks on churches and damage caused to statues in the State. “Action under the Goondas Act will be taken if anyone attempts to disturb the religious harmony in the State,” he added. The statement came in the wake of the attack on a church in Coimbatore on Thursday. In Chennai on Friday, the glass panel of the wayside pulpit in CSI Emmanuel Church, Anna Nagar West, was found damaged. It led to tension in the area for some time in the morning as members of the church and motorists gathered at the spot. Wellington Jesudoss, presbyter-in-charge, said two large stones were found inside the broken glass cubicle of the pulpit. The damage was noticed by a church helper at 6 a.m. on Friday. Thirumangalam police, who have a registered a case, said the church officials had in their complaint suspected a former employee, Yesuraj (25) of Tiruvallur, who was recently removed from job.
