Child dies of suspected vaccination

Special Correspondent

TIRUCHENGODE: A 10-month old female child died of complications suspected to have been associated with measles vaccination here on Thursday.

Rashitha was given the vaccination at the Jedarpalayam Primary Health Centre on Tuesday. The child developed high fever and vomiting the next day.

She was taken to a local nursing home, which directed her parents to the Tiruchengode Government Hospital where she was admitted on Wednesday evening. But she died in the early hours of Thursday.

Meanwhile the Deputy Director, Health Services, Namakkal district, Dr. C. Sekar, denied that the death of the child was due to vaccination. Talking to The Hindu, he said along with Rashitha, 11 other children were given the vaccination that day. “They are all healthy,” he said and added that the vaccinated children were also kept under medical inspection for 2 hours before being discharged.
