Prem Prakash is still the best

CHENNAI: S. Prem Prakash of Champions Billiards Academy (Coimbatore) won the TNBSA State-ranking billiards championship for the 16th successive time — and 17th overall — defeating compatriot R. Praveen Kumar in Tuesday’s final.

Prem Prakash raced to a 4-0 lead in the best-of-nine final, before Praveen reduced the deficit by two. But the experienced Prem Prakash sealed the contest with a break of 55 and retained the title.

Maheshwaran triumphs

P. Maheshwaran of SRM Engineering College won the Alpha Arts & Science College State-level inter-college, schools and senior’s chess championship organised by the Thiruvallur District Chess Association.

SRM claimed the overall championship for colleges.

Good show by SSNCE

SSNCE performed creditably in Sports Fest-08, the inter-collegiate competition organised by IIT-Madras, triumphing in basketball (men), badminton (women), chess (men and women), and table tennis (men). D.B. Jain College won the volleyball and hockey tournaments.

Inter-collegiate tournaments

The State-level inter-collegiate Shri Ishari Velan memorial rolling Trophy tournaments — in the men’s ball badminton, basketball and volleyball, and women’s ball badminton and volleyball — will take place at Vel’s Srinivasa College of Engineering & Technology, from October 8 to 10.

TT tournament

Over 40 schools and 300 children will participate in the two-day CBSE Cluster (State-level) table tennis tournament hosted by Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan SSS beginning October 9.

The competition will be held in the u-14, 16 and 19 categories.

The winners will qualify for the National-level tournament at Gurgaon in December.

Girls’ football

The CFA women’s wing will conduct an inter-school football tournament for girls in the under-14 and under-17 age categories from October 16. Entries close on Oct. 14.

Rapid chess

Bloom Chess Academy will conduct an open children’s rapid tournament at Kavi Bharathi Vidyalaya, Thiruvottiyur, on October 11 and 12.

The entry accompanied by a fee of Rs. 50 may be sent to M.A. Velayudham, secretary, 19, Nellikaran Street, Thiruvottiyur, Chennai-19, by Oct. 9.

Sri Ramachandra University, Porur, will conduct the Dr. Sarat Chandra Memorial inter-collegiate staff cricket tournament from October 18 in Chennai.
