Award for fighting tobacco menace

Staff Reporter

CHANDIGARH: Social activist Hemant Goswami has been selected for the prestigious international "Global Smoke Free Partnership Award" in recognition of his work in controlling the menace of tobacco.

The honour is awarded every year by the Global Smoke free Partnership, a joint worldwide initiative of over 20 international organisations formed to promote effective smoke-free air policies worldwide.

Mr. Goswami, credited with initiating the smoke-free movement in India and making Chandigarh a smoke-free city, says recognitions reassure a person that he is moving in the right direction, but the goal is still far ahead.

“Making Chandigarh a smoke-free city was something I was determined to do, even though everyone laughed at me when I first proposed the project. Today they joke about the sustainability of the project, but only till they are proved wrong,” he adds.
