“Local bodies should retain professionals”

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Delhi Lieutenant-Governor Tejendra Khanna has underlined the need for local bodies to retain hard-core professionals and show the door to inefficient and corrupt officials.

Addressing the inaugural session of the All-India Mayors’ Conference that began here on Monday, Mr. Khanna said for effective delivery of civic services at the grassroots level it was important to retain hard-core professionals who have knowledge, high integrity, efficiency and courtesy.

The L-G said the time had also come for the local bodies to ensure cent per cent quality in civic works.

“In fact, there must be mandatory third party quality audit. The senior functionaries of local bodies are custodians of public money and its use should be exercised with the same restraint which we use while spending our personal money.”

Emphasising the need for public participation in civic development activities, Delhi Mayor Arti Mehra cited the example of Kochi where for every 5,000 population there is one lady trained in nursing and medicines.

“She is called ‘Doctor Didi’ and each family pays Rs.5 per month in addition to the honorarium by the government,” she added.
