Teachers voice resentment over pay report

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: A delegation of the Federation of Central Universities Teachers’ Associations met UGC chairman S.K. Thorat here on Monday to express teachers’ “resentment” against the Pay Review Committee that recently submitted its report.

“The committee has deliberately downgraded the pay scale of a Reader in the pay band 3. The bifurcation of the Reader’s grade is a retrograde step, which we strongly oppose,” said Federation president Aditya Narayan Misra in a statement on Tuesday.

The delegation also rejected the proposal for introducing two new posts of senior professor and professor of eminence at universities as it was likely to create “more hierarchies”. It also expressed its anguish as its longstanding demand for introduction of professorship at colleges had not been addressed by the committee.

“The G. K. Chadha Committee has not restored the complete parity of librarians with teachers in terms of the career advancement scheme and retirement age, thus downgrading the scale and status of a librarian in the higher education system,” pointed out Mr. Misra.

The suggestion of peer review was also not acceptable to the delegation.
