THANJAVUR: The Centre has allocated about Rs. 5 crore for construction of 119 additional classrooms in the panchayat union middle schools under the Sarva Siksha Abhyan scheme in Thanjavur district this year, said M.S. Shanmugam, Collector, here on Tuesday. Addressing the district planning committee meeting of the organised by the district panchayat, the Collector said that 25 primary schools in the district had been upgraded as middle schools this year and construction of 31 additional classrooms for these schools was nearing completion. He instructed the public works department to strengthen the bunds of rivers and major irrigation channels before the onset of northeast monsoon. He wanted the Agricultural Engineering department officials to convene a meeting of ayacutdars and carry out important development works for the benefit of farmers. Awareness of NREGPThe Collector stressed the need for creating awareness among rural people of the National Rural Employment Guarantee (NREG) scheme that provides employment for a minimum period of 100-days for poor agricultural workers and other weaker sections of the society and wanted the village panchayats to improve basic amenities required for the villages. Selvi Sivagnanam, chairperson of Thanjavur District Panchayat, who presided over the meeting, wanted the planning committee members to submit report about the progress of repair works of the schools in their respective areas. He also requested the members to inform the district panchayat in advance about the works to be taken up in villages. Several issues including the development works to be carried out by Social Welfare, Public Works, Agricultural Engineering and Agriculture departments and also under the Sarva Siksha Abhyan scheme and construction of compound walls for schools under the Namakku Naame Thittam were discussed in detail at the meeting. R.Revathi, secretary of Thanjavur District Panchayat, members of district panchayat, presidents of panchayat unions and town panchayats and senior district officials attended the meeting.
