TIRUCHI: The police has taken into custody 25 persons on charge of hoarding and smuggling ration rice in the central districts and seized 3,582 kgs of rice from them. Following reports on the hoarding and smuggling of ration rice, the Inspector General of Police, Central Zone, Karan Singha directed the Superintendents of Police of Tiruchi, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Karur, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts to check the same. The police parties conducted raids recently and arrested nine persons in Karur district, seven persons in Ariyalur district, four in Pudukottai, three in Tiruchi and one each in Thanjavur and Perambalur districts. Mr. Singha directed the SPs to strictly monitor the movement of the anti-social elements and conduct surprise check of vehicles. The people indulging in such illegal activity should be identified and booked under the Goondas Act. On the direction of the IG, the police also conducted prohibition raids in various parts of the central districts in the recent past and booked 116 illicit distillers – Nagapattinam 51; Tiruchi 22; Tiruvarur 11; Perambalur 10; Pudukottai and Thanjavur 9 each; Karur and Ariyalur two each – under the Goondas Act. All of them have been detained for one year. The police has also initiated steps to check the activities of the rowdy elements in a big way. A record number of 186 anti-social elements who were involved in various serious crimes like murder, dacoity and robbery have been detained under the Goondas Act during the current year. While 33 rowdies each were arrested in Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur districts, 30 were arrested in Tiruchi district, 27 in Karur, 25 in Ariyalur, 15 in Pudukottai, 12 in Perambalur and 11 in Thanjavur, the release added.
