EC urged to initiate action against Asnotikar

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: Senior Congress leaders, led by the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President R.V. Deshpande, on Monday called on the Chief Electoral Officer M.N. Vidyashankar and urged him to initiate action against the Fisheries Minister Anand Vasant Asnotikar for allegedly filing a false affidavit with the Returning Officer while contesting the Assembly elections from the Karwar constituency. Accompanied by former Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh, the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council V.S. Ugrappa, the Karnataka Pradesh Youth Congress President Krishna Byregowda and former Ministers A. Krishnappa, Rani Satish and H.M. Revanna, Mr. Deshpande said that the Returning Officer had, after an inquiry, concluded that Mr. Asnotikar had not declared his immovable properties in the affidavit. The Chief Electoral Officer told the Congress leaders that he would act as per the law.

Mr. Deshpande and Mr. Ugrappa told the CEO that it amounted to serious violation of the Representation of the People Act, the IPC and Criminal Penal Code. The RO should not be allowed to succumb to any pressure from the Government, they said.
