Government accepts civic chiefs’ demands

To pay salaries to staff through treasuries Salaries to be disbursed on the first of every month
HYDERABAD: Bowing to the demand of Andhra Pradesh Chamber of Municipal Chairmen, the government has extended the moratorium on moving a no-confidence motion against municipal chairpersons and vice-chairpersons from three to four years.
This implies that the opposition parties cannot move a no-trust motion until these elected leaders complete four years in office.
The decision to extend the time-limit was taken by Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy at a meeting here on Monday. The Chief Minister also agreed in principle to the proposal to pay salaries of municipal staff through government treasuries and on the first day of the month as in the case of Panchayat Raj employees. Dr. Reddy, however, said the government was examining the report submitted by committee which studied the pattern of salary payment to the municipal staff in several states.
Sources said the meeting, which was attended by Municipal Administration Minister Koneru Ranga Rao, Principal Secretary, Revenue, G. Sudhir, and others did not see any reason in the demand made by contractors executing municipal works to scrap collection of VAT on their works.
