COIMBATORE: Industrial associations have appealed to the Union Government to continue operations of the Indian Statistical Institute here. Vasan, the Southern Indian Engineering Manufacturers Association president Jayakumar Ramdass said the Coimbatore unit of the institute was accessible to all the industries and was imparting information on quality control to the technicians and workers. Latest toolsIt also helped the industries use the latest tools and techniques such as lean manufacturing, six sigma and business forecasting with its resources. It was learnt that the Coimbatore unit of the institute was likely to be closed so that it could be amalgamated with the new Chennai centre. This would deprive the Coimbatore industries of several benefits and could affect the competitiveness of the units. Technical supportTechnical support was essential for the industries here at this juncture as the units were on a growth trajectory, he said. Six Sigma methodsThe Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore, has said in a release that the Coimbatore centre of the institute was started in 1954 and in the recent times, it trained a number of personnel in Six Sigma methods. It was a self-supporting centre and did not suffer from any operational or financial problems. The chamber appealed to the State Government to take up the matter with the Centre and prevent the closure of the Coimbatore unit.
