I sent two complaints to Postmaster General (PMG), Tiruchi, on June 23– one on non-delivery of a post card to the local BSNL carrying the remark “refused” and the other one regarding 18 days’ delay in delivery by speed post. The complaints were acknowledged on July 14 after two reminders. Till date, I have not heard further on the complaints. There is not even a regret for the inconvenience caused. I have sent two reminders to the PMG. There is not only a dereliction, but also nonchalance. This is how the Postal department functions. S. Sivaraman, Srirangam. Injustice to pensionersThe Sixth Central Pay Commission has recommended 1.86 per cent increase on the basic pension plus dearness pay plus dearness allowance as on January 1, 2006. But now the Railway Board has fixed the new pension with an increase of 2.26 per cent on the basic pension of the Fifth Pay Central Pay Commission as on January 1, 1996, depriving the benefit of subsequent 50 per cent DA merged with the basic pension. Why this discrimination? In the absence of any other benefits, this is a great injustice to pensioners. R. Muthusamy, Sangiliandapuram Thanjavur neglected by RailwaysThe Southern Railway had recently announced running of 7 special trains on the Chennai Egmore-Nagercoil sector from September 28–October 20. The Railways must be complimented for its concern for passengers from these places. People of Thanjavur have to depend on Rockfort Express (8.30 p.m) the only train available for reaching Chennai. Though the government is all set to develop this historically prominent town into a tourist haven, the Southern Railway seems to neglect its citizens. Hence I request Minister of State for Railways R. Velu, to look into the matter and redress the grievances of Thanjavur residents. Vengarai S. Raman, Thanjavur-7. Restore stationThe Udayampatti Railway station, which is next to the Tiruchi Junction in Tiruchi-Rameswaram section, was closed by Southern Railway due to poor patronage. Likewise, the next station at Thondaima Nallur was also closed. After Tiruchi, trains stop only at Keeranur which is about 20 km away. I request that the Udayampatti railway station be restored as the area is fast developing and a lot of residential areas are coming up adjacent to this railway station like KK Nagar, Iyappa Nagar, Edamalaipattipudur, Ramachandra Nagar, RMS Colony, Crawford Anbu Nagar which are having a population of more than 75,000. The station may be restored and shifted to nearby manned level crossing at Sundaram Pillai Thottam as it would be beneficial to all people. G. Baskaran, Crawford. Platform toilet a mustTiruchi Town Railway station is lacking basic facilities like pay-and-use toilet. The expansion of platform one is the need of the hour and the roof in the first platform must be extended with facilities like urinals-cum-toilets for gents and ladies as they have to answer nature’s call. As Tiruchi town railway station has only two platforms, anti-social elements gain entry and the second platform is used for unlawful activities. The Railways can construct a compound wall on the Devadhanam side to prevent the entry of anti-social elements and the second platform should have a separate roof and be provided with lights. K. Venkatesan, Rockfort Agraharam. Day lightsIn the Pallavan-Vaigai Express running between Tiruchi/ Madurai and Chennai, the lights are not being turned off in the day hours. While the nation is power scarce, and the notices _ ‘Switch off lights / fans, when not in use _ pasted on Railway premises, the crew seldom care to save power. Would the Divisional Railway Managers of Tiruchi and Madurai look into this matter and instruct their staff to save power? C. Ramalingam, Woraiyur. No accommodation in special trainsThe day advance reservation for trains bound for Chennai and Bangalore were open, the berths and seats got filled in no time for Deepavali holidays. Special trains are run but their timings and reservations are announced at short notice and these are also exhausted soon. To address the genuine difficulties for reserved accommodations, the railways should press into service special trains consisting of only second class sleeper berths and seats. Train travel is always a preferred choice and hence Diwali specials should ensure seat availability even as late as a week before the eve. Day time specials with only second class seats can also be run to meet the rush. Janatha class travel is the only solution for the rush. A.V. Narayanan, Tiruchi-18. Passengers happy with RPFThe activities of RPF personnel are appreciated by passengers who travel by 20 express trains. No complaints have come. Hats off to the RPF and the Railway authorities. The RPF should keep it up as the expectations of the public are great. S. A. Govindarajan, K. K. Nagar. Milk supply problem in TiruchiStaff members of Tiruchi District Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union Ltd are collecting money for supply of milk on a particular date every month at a particular collection point. The consumers are put to extreme hardship when the agents fail to supply milk, quoting flimsy reasons. We are not able to get the refund for non-supply of milk. Even if the consumers go away for a few days, they are not able to collect the money from agents. Therefore, instead of issuing cards to the customers, coupons can be issued. People can collect the milk against the coupons. This will help the consumers very much. P. Subramaniam, T. V. Koil. Trim bank staff for efficiencyThe two-day strike by bank employees paralysed financial market for two days and the common man was put to difficulty for no fault of his. The thinking of the bank unions that they can achieve their objectives by confronting the Central Government needs total change. In these days of e-banking, these modern day Maharajas should understand that a few million well-fed people like them with no accountability could cow down the billion strong populace of India. After all, customer is the king. We need modernisation of banking operations with fewer and lesser qualified employees at a much lesser cost to the exchequer. T.M. Renganathan, Srirangam. After pigs, mosquitoesWith reference to the news item in The Hindu on pig menace, I wish to bring to the notice of Tiruchi Corporation another health hazard _ mosquitoes. Not only are they small in size but also their reproduction rate is on the higher side. With the onset of monsoon, it is going to spreading diseases like malaria. Hardly did I see any preventive activity carried out by the corporation in Tiruchi in the recent past. S. Mahesh, Annanagar. Ill-advised planThe Centre’s plan to authorise non-government organisations to penalise those found violating the ban on smoking in designated places from October 2 is ill-advised. NGOs are meant for creating awareness among the public. Expecting them to impose fine on erring public is not in good taste. Instead, NGO volunteers may be entrusted with the work of reporting the erring persons to the police station concerned. Sampath, Srirangam. ‘Single child’ parentsThe government has given employees Rs.100 per month and half per cent interest rebate for house building advances for those who have undergone family planning (after two children). But nowadays many parents have only one child and do not undergo family planning till their retirement. The government should consider such facility for them too. S. Radhakrishnan, Kattur. Pollution comes down in Delhi with CNGI had been in Delhi a few days back. After a court order, most of city buses, autos and carriage vehicles switched over to the compressed natural gas and there is virtually no air pollution. The Tamil Nadu government should invoke an ordinance to convert all vehicles to run on CNG to relieve the metros and cities from pollution. A.Ansar, K. K. Nagar.
