Thiruavananthapuram: Two incidents of theft, with stark similarities in the mode of execution, took place in the city on Monday in a time gap of barely 45 minutes. The first incident took place at around 11 a.m. on the Statue-General Hospital Road. Vinod, 41, partner of Leisure Tours at the Statue junction was getting out of a Qualis car parked on the road when a woman walking by hit her hand on the door of the car. Seconds later, a man walked up to him telling that some currency notes were lying beneath the car. Vinod stooped down to take the notes and by the time he got up, a bag kept in the back seat of the car had vanished. The bag reportedly contained Rs.1.28 lakh in cash, cheque leaves and credit cards of various banks among other office records. Around 45 minutes after this incident, a few metres away near the Accountant General’s office, a similar incident resulted in the theft of around 33.5 sovereigns of gold. Vinod and Smitha, owners of VSS Fancy Store, near East Fort, had parked their Qualis in front of the AG’s office for some transactions at the nearby IDBI bank. Vinod was waiting inside the car when a man came to the front seat left window saying that some currency notes were lying beneath the car. Meantime, another man came to the driver’s seat window making the same observation. In the time that Vinod got out of the car and checked, a bag kept in the front seat of the car containing gold ornaments, cash, a bank locker key and pass book disappeared. Both cases have been registered at the Cantonment police station. While the first case has been booked under Section 380 of IPC the second incident has been booked under Section 379 and 34.
